The first question we’re going to ask you is: what kind of beaches do you like? With crystal-clear water? With cliffs?
Of course, you can choose them based on many features: if they are accessible on foot, if they have parking, if they have fine sand… There are so many combinations that it seems impossible for a beach to exist that fits all tastes and profiles. And there is! It’s Playa de Muro and we’re going to tell you all about it.
What Playa de Muro is like
Playa de Muro in Mallorca has a combination of ingredients that makes it perfect: the vast number of kilometers of fine white sand, its shallow crystal-clear waters, and a line of vegetation in view at the back that belongs to the S’Albufera Natural Park.
It is the most extensive beach in Mallorca —between five and seven kilometers depending on the section you consider— and it’s in the north of the island, between Alcudia and Can Picafort.
If you are looking for a large beach with plenty of services that is pleasant, it has to be Playa de Muro.
The four zones of Playa de Muro
We told you that the sandy area is the largest in Mallorca, but there’s a bit of a catch because you could say that Playa de Muro isn’t just one, but four different sections. We’ll tell you what they are and how to tell them apart to see which one you like best.
Sectors 1 and 2 —known as Playa de Muro and Las Gaviotas, respectively— are the liveliest and best-equipped. They have beach clubs, restaurants, water sports schools, and every service you can imagine; there’s no shortage of lifeguards, showers, sun loungers, umbrellas, and parking here. If you want to have everything at hand, this is a very tempting stretch.
Es Comú —known as Sector 3— is very different. It is the most unspoiled area of the beach —1.5 kilometers long— surrounded by dunes and pines, which you reach after about a 15-minute walk along paths and wooden walkways. It certainly doesn’t lack charm.
And the last part we’re going to tell you about is Ses Casetes des Capellans —Sector 4— which has a feature that none of the other sections have: small fishermen’s cottages on the sand. Some of them are over 100 years old, which is why, even though this is the only section without a Blue Flag, it is well worth a visit.
Why the water at Playa de Muro is different
One of the things that surprises travelers most is how shallow Playa de Muro is. You’ll be able to walk for meters and meters before the water reaches your waist. A plus point if you’re coming to Mallorca with kids!
You might like it more or less; what’s clear is that this way, when you take a dip, you’ll be able to see for a longer distance how crystal-clear the waters are and how white the sand is on the seabed.
The reason it’s shallow has to do with the large number of Posidonia oceanica meadows —so-called Neptune grass— that exist here. These are responsible for filtering the water and keeping it so clean and transparent, making it attractive for sea turtles and manta rays.
Not to mention its temperature… Playa de Muro is pleasant for swimming from June to October and, if you don’t mind it being a bit chilly, you could say from April.
S’Albufera, another point in its favor
Playa de Muro would be an extraordinary beach even if it didn’t have the S’Albufera Natural Park behind it. But it does, and that makes it something hard to compare with any other beach in Mallorca.
Have you heard of S’Albufera? It is the most extensive and important wetland in the Balearic Islands —with almost 1,700 hectares of marshes, reed beds, lagoons, and pine forests declared a Natural Park in 1988 and included in the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance—.
Inside, more than 300 species of birds live regularly —herons, flamingos, kingfishers, and harriers, among others— as well as thousands of migratory birds. If you’re a photography lover or love traveling with your binoculars around your neck, you’re in the ideal destination.
You can enjoy the views of S’Albufera from Playa de Muro or head out to explore it on foot or by bike along one of its four signposted routes.
What to do in Playa de Muro beyond swimming
The range of activities is almost endless. Besides the typical —lying on the sand and enjoying the surroundings— you can go kitesurfing, windsurfing, wingsurfing, and sailing thanks to the embat wind, which blows steadily from sea to land.
There’s also room for a boat trip, the chance to get on a kayak or a paddle surf board, or to do some sightseeing out of the water.
Very close by are Alcudia and Can Picafort, two other charming towns with restaurants, a marina, and plenty of activities to do.
